Letter Carriers Food Drive Volunteer
What
Volunteer Center:
Cape Fear Volunteer Center
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington
Description:
The 15th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. On that day, Letter Carriers throughout all 50 states and U.S. jurisdictions collect non-perishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal routes. The food is collected in over 10,000 communities by nearly 1,500 local branches of the postal union, along with rural carriers and other volunteers. Donations are delivered to food banks, pantries and shelters that serve the area where the donations are collected. Since its inception in 1993, the nationwide drive has collected and delivered over three-quarters of a billion pounds of food - 765.5 million pounds - to help hungry families.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina staff and volunteers work alongside our local Letter Carriers to collect and deliver the food donations in our area. Last year, Letter Carriers and volunteers in our service area collected over 340,000 pounds of food! We hope to do this and more this year.

Volunteers are needed to help on the afternoon of May 12th. All volunteers will be given a NALC t-shirt and snacks will be available throughout the day. There are two volunteer opportunities available:

Post Office Volunteer: Throughout the afternoon, Letter Carriers will be delivering food donations to local post offices and volunteers will be on hand at the post offices to help unload the trucks. This is a great opportunity for individuals, families and groups of most sizes. We ask that all volunteers under the age of 16 be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteer Driver: Volunteers are also needed to help Letter Carriers with food pick ups. Volunteers will be following letter carriers and picking up food donations as well as meeting letter carriers at designated spots to help transport food donations back to the post offices. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and complete a driving verification form prior to volunteering.
