Registration Open for Fall Volunteer Management Training Series

Volunteer Loudoun will again present a Volunteer Management Training Series (VMTS), designed for volunteer managers of community organizations.  The six week series will begin Wednesday, October 14, 2009 and will continue for five consecutive weeks.

The series, developed by the Points of Light Institute, is a high-quality, comprehensive set of courses in volunteer management.  Emphasis will be placed on learning the steps to successful volunteer program development; developing volunteer recruitment and supervision skills; and planning ways to improve existing volunteer programs.

Each of the six courses, lasting 4 hours, from 3:30-7:30 p.m., will be held at the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services, 215 Depot Court, 1st Floor, Leesburg:

Course 1, Wednesday, October 14:  Understanding Volunteering – volunteer trends in the U.S.; characteristics of effective volunteer programs; and volunteer motivation models.

Course 2, Wednesday, October 21:  Planning Your Volunteer Program – conducting basic needs assessments; creating volunteer position descriptions; and developing a purpose statement, policies and budget.

Course 3, Wednesday, October 28:  Recruiting & Placing Volunteers – developing volunteer recruitment strategies and messages; accessing underutilized volunteers; and interviewing volunteers for optimal placement.

Course 4, Wednesday, November 4:  Orienting & Training Volunteers – identifying training needs; building a training session; and effective training delivery.

Course 5, Tuesday, November 10:  Supervising Volunteers – defining and communicating expectations; supervising and recognizing people with different motivations; and developing a recognition plan.

Course 6, Wednesday, November 8:  Evaluating a Volunteer Program – deciding what to evaluate; assessing volunteer satisfaction, management and outcomes; and using evaluation information.

"Often, volunteer managers believe that taking the series will refresh their skills, but by the end of the course they have developed a road map and the tools necessary to implement a new volunteer program or to improve their program’s current structure by maintaining a superior program,” says Debra Bressler, VMTS trainer.

The cost for each course is $25, or you may register for all six for $100.  To register for one or more courses, please visit www.loudoun.gov/volunteer or call 703-737-8424 for an application.  The deadline to apply is October 9, 2009.  Checks should be made payable to Volunteer Loudoun and must be received prior to the first session to guarantee registration.
