Exceptional Community Volunteer Award Winners!
Angie Cho
Angie Cho, a student at Syracuse University, volunteers with the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter American Red Cross. As a volunteer she helped officially form the Syracuse University Red Cross Club. She developed the clubs constitution, formed an executive board and began recruiting membership. As the club developed and grew she lead the group in efforts concerning Kenya, Pakistan and communities on the west side of Syracuse. The club’s membership thrives and is involved in in many activities on campus.
As a result of Angie’s election to the Board of Directors more SU students are now volunteering their time and energy on Red Cross initiatives, such as blood drives, trainings, adopt-a-platoon project and Measles Initiative. , Angie’s presence has heightened the importance of youth services to the Chapter and the mission of the agency.
Samantha Page
Samantha Page is among a select group of very talented and dedicated young volunteers to be considered for state-level honors with the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Although she didn’t win a state-level award, she is an Exceptional Community Volunteer. She has put in over 500 hours over the course of three years at From the Ground Up Therapeutic Horsemanship Inc. (FTGU). FTGU serves people with various disabilities teaching them to learn to ride and care for horses. During weekly lessons Samantha leads, sidewalks, does warm up exercises with the riders and tack up the horses. In April 2007, she and her friend Shawn Sicchio fundraised and contributed some of her own money to renovate and reorganize the program’s tack room.
Angie and Samantha’s volunteerism vividly demonstrates that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of our community.
