Your United Way funds local agencies that affect the lives of those in need in our community. We focus our energies on helping children and youth, responding to people in crisis, helping the mentally and physically challenged and providing for medical assistance. In 2004, the United Way of Henry County & Martinsville provided support to 22 human service agencies. Through these agencies, hundreds of individuals and families in our community were helped with everything from emergency needs, after school care, medical assistance, positive youth programs, shelter, and counseling services. Growing Basic Needs Funded Through Grants Over the past several years, individuals and families needing assistance with the most basic needs has continued to grow. In 2004, the United Way, through a generous grant from The Harvest Foundation, was able to assist with many of these needs through several agencies.
Due to increasing unemployment and a growing segment of the population who is underemployed and uninsured, has created a need for assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, food, transportation and medications. Through a $200,000 grant from The Harvest Foundation, the United Way was able to provide additional funds to Salvation Army, Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services, The Free Clinic, Mission Center and Citizens Against Family Violence.
Special Focus on Helping Children Succeed
United Way¿s Success By 6 is a national, community-based movement of public and private partners that work together to deliver proven solutions that ensure all children ages zero to six are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed. Years of research prove that attention to children's physical, social, emotional and intellectual development in early childhood is vital to their success. Success By 6 focuses on the needs of the whole child by addressing environmental and systemic issues that influence development. Helping Our Local Nonprofits Achieve
In any community, nonprofit organizations provide countless resources and services to its citizens. In Martinsville and Henry County, this is no different. Local nonprofits provide everything from disaster relief and lifesaving training, help provide the most basic needs for children and families, and help the youngest to the oldest in our community reach their fullest potential.
Knowing how critical the nonprofit community is to the overall health of our citizens, the United Way, through a generous grant from The Harvest Foundation, launched the Nonprofit Capacity Building Initiative in 2004. The overall goal of the initiative is to strengthen the capacity and collective power of the local nonprofit sector in order to enhance the quality of life in Martinsville and Henry County.
Over a three-year period, United Way will manage the initiative to ensure local organizations have access to ongoing training, technology resources and assistance in the areas of organizational development, growth and sustainability, communication, collaboration and sharing of resources. The initiative is focused on enhancing and building local nonprofit leadership, resources and outreach.
