Skagit Volunteer Center. The Volunteer Center’s mission is to encourage local volunteerism.  The program supports our community through recruiting and matching volunteers; providing technical assistance in the area of volunteerism to the public, businesses, and non-profits; and organizing special projects to respond to local needs or problems. Examples of major volunteer events run by the VC include Make A Difference Day and Days of Caring.

Volunteer Chore: Recruits and coordinates volunteers to provide direct services to frail elderly and disabled adults.  Services include housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, yard work, and minor home repair, such as adding wheel chair ramps and grab bars to houses to allow elderly people to remain independent in their own homes.

Americorps*VISTA: Working closely with non-profit agencies in the community, the VISTA program develops projects that directly impact the needs of the low-income population of Skagit County.  VISTA volunteers are placed in non-profit agencies for one year to further develop and establish these programs in the community.

Washington Reading Corps: The mission of the Washington Reading Corps is to improve the reading abilities of young students across Washington through research-based tutoring of struggling readers and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, national service, business and state partners. SCCAA currently supports over 30 AmeriCorps*USA and AmeriCorps* VISTA members who serve for 10 ½ to 12 months in 11 schools across Skagit & Whatcom Counties.  WRC Members help build the capacity of local school reading programs by working with school staff to design or enhance a volunteer tutor program that is aligned with the school reading curriculum and overall school schedule. AmeriCorps* USA members primarily perform direct service tutoring one-on-one or in small groups to support struggling readers identified by each host school. AmeriCorps*VISTA members work with their schools to perform community outreach by recruiting community and peer and cross-age volunteer tutors, as well as work with local businesses to provide in-kind donations that support tutoring programs. Both AmeriCorps*USA and AmeriCorps* VISTA members work with schools to increase family involvement by coordinating activities such as family literacy events.
