Help

I am 13 or younger, can I use the system?
Yes, youth 13 and under are encouraged to volunteer actively in their community and many organizations welcome your participation. Use 1-800-Volunteer.org to find opportunities that match your interests and abilities. Contact information is included with most opportunities and you can use it to contact the organization directly to find out more about how you can help. If you would like to create an account on 1-800-Volunteer.org so that you can track your volunteer service hours, please have your parent or guardian create the account with their own email address. For liability reasons, we do not allow youth 13 and under to have their own accounts on the system and use their own email addresses.

What browsers are supported by 1-800-Volunteer.org?
Currently the system supports the following browsers: Mozilla, Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher), Netscape (5.5 or higher), Opera and Firefox.

How do I create a profile?
You can use this website to browse Volunteer opportunities, but in order to view the full details of each opportunity and sign up to participate, you must create a Volunteer Profile. Complete the short Create a Volunteer Profile form, and login with your username and password.

Your information is stored in a secure, national database that connects Volunteer Centers, non-profit organizations and their Volunteer opportunities, to interested Volunteers. Once you login, you will have the ability to view and edit your profile where you can specify your interests, and designate your preferences for being contacted.

To learn more about the 1-800-Volunteer database, visit the 1-800-Volunteer.org website. There you will find our Privacy Policy and additional information Terms & Conditions.

How do I update my profile?
Once logged in with your Volunteer Profile, you will notice that the options in the upper, left-hand corner change to "Logout" and "Update your profile." Upon clicking on "Update your profile," you will be taken to the 1-800-Volunteer.org website to view and manage your complete Volunteer Profile. Although you are currently visiting the website of your local Volunteer Center, your profile is connected to the 1-800-Volunteer service of the Points of Light Foundation.

On the 1-800-Volunteer.org website, note the options available for managing your profile, including: Auto-match, Opportunities, Update Profile, and Logout. On the Volunteer Profile form, you can update your username and password, personal, contact, and additional information. Please note that most of this information is not required, but the more information you provide will help to better match available Volunteer opportunities to your interests and skills.

How do I find an Opportunity?
To help you to find a Volunteer opportunity that is the right match for your interests, needs, and skills, two search tools are available. First, the Find an Opportunity Quick Search on the homepage allows you to search the opportunities by zip code, the radius you are willing to travel from that zip code, keyword, and/or issue.

For more search options, click on the "Advanced Search" link. Here you have several additional search options available. The more options you select, the more limited your search results will be. For example, if you enter your Zip Code, check Group Activity and Handicap Accessible, your results will only include opportunities that fulfill all criteria, not opportunities that match any one of the criteria.

Your search results are viewable in two formats: list and calendar. Click on the opportunity title in the list or on the calendar to view the full details. If searching by zip code, you will find that these search results are limited to the area covered by this Volunteer Center.

How do I sign up for an Opportunity?
Once you have found a Volunteer opportunity that you are interested in, click on the "Sign me up!" button on the Opportunities Detail page (click through to the details from the list or calendar view of the search results to get to the Detail page). You will then see a list of the timeslots for which the organization has a need, as well as the number of Volunteers desired. Check the box next to each of the timeslots that you can commit to, enter any additional comments for the organization, and click on the SUBMIT button. The organization that you have expressed interest in Volunteering for will be notified of your interest, and provided with your contact information.

If you should decide that you are no longer available or interested in an opportunity that you have signed up for, click "Update your profile" in the upper-left hand corner of the screen, once you are logged in with your Volunteer Profile. Click the "Opportunities" link in the navigation and select "Cancel" next to the opportunity name. The organization will be notified that you are no longer available for this opportunity.

How do I post an Opportunity?
The Post an Opportunity option on the toolbar is available only to Organizations that have registered with this Volunteer Center.
