Adopt A Grandparent Program - This project is a new initiative which was implemented to encourage family volunteering as a unit even though this service could be performed by an individual. This program will address the need for companionship and compassion to those residents living in nursing homes who are alone and isolated. Through this process, Adopt A Grandparent Program will help to enhance the lives of seniors through companionship, health and wellness, and produce empowered, healthy, laughter-prone individuals. Volunteers must commit to a weekly 1 hour visit with the "grandparent". Volunteers must have a heart for seniors, must have a listening spirit, and must know to develop trust in their "grandparent" -- by being on time, being trustworthy, etc. Verbal communication and a loving welcome will further enhance the relationship.

Friends of the Parks' Day - This project is through the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreational Department and is held on the third Saturday in April. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. The main park is Capaha Park, but projects are also done in Arena Park, Kiwanis Park, Riverfront Park, May Green Garden Park, Washington Park, Missouri Park, Old Lorimier Cemetery, Cape LaCroix Trail from Osage to Shawnee Soccer Fields, Fort D Park, Dennis Scivally Park, as well as at the JC Municipal Golf Course. A sack lunch and a t-shirt is given to all Friends of the Parks' Day participants.
"The Gift of Christmas" - This program was developed to encourage groups to assist with decorating local nursing facilities during the Christmas Holiday. Many of these facilities can use an 'extra hand' for this wonderful holiday. When giving this beautiful gift to those residents who live there, you will experience a spirit of joy and wonder and you will be compensated with a smile and loving gratitude for those lives you touched. The Gift of Christmas is usually performed right after the Thanksgiving Holiday and two weeks before Christmas.
Employee Volunteer Program - Our goal for the upcoming year (2009) is to encourage corporations/businesses to form their own employee volunteer program by presenting information on the benefits of establishing a volunteer program within their company. The Volunteer Intergenerational Center will bring corporations/businesses into the nonprofit arena with a chance of creating partnerships and sponsorships. Secondly, the corporate labor pool will increase the volunteer work force for nonprofit agencies. This program is called the "Caring Hearts Program".
If you are interested in any of these programs, please contact the Volunteer Intergenerational Center at 573-335-7555, 573-887-3664, or 573-471-8584. Or you can email us at rsvpvic@sbcglobal.net.
