The Volunteer Center of the Virginia Peninsula is an affiliate of the Points of Light Foundation and a member of the Volunteer Center National Network and has met the National Standards of Excellence set forth by these organizations. The Center is also a member of the Volunteer Centers of Virginia State Association.

Locally, The Volunteer Center partners with United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, recruiting and placing volunteers for an annual Day of Caring. The Center also serves as the local community’s clearinghouse for identifying, matching and advocating on behalf of individuals and groups offering volunteer support to a wide range of community programs and services. Annual events include the Human Race and the Corporate Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Convening the bi-annual Food and Shelter Board for dispersment of FEMA funding being a local advocate for national service days are additional activities of the Center.  Training for local nonprofits on subjects including Volunteer Management and Board Development is offered.

The Center provides national, state and local training to groups and individuals in disaster services; recruiting, training, and mobilizing groups to be pro-active in a disaster situation.  Working in cooperation with the following community programs promoting disaster preparedness and response:

  • Hampton Citizen Corps
  • Peninsula Disaster Recovery Task Force
  • RAMA (Riverdale Area Ministries Alliance )
  • VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster)

The Center’s Board of Directors is a diverse group of business leaders, non-profit leaders and community faith-based leaders who represent the service areas of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York and Gloucester Counties .
