About: Accokeek Foundation
Website: www.accokeek.org
Mission: By blending history, ecology, economics and conservation, the Accokeek Foundation strives to teach land stewardship and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the Tidewater Potomac. The National Colonial Farm, the Ecosystem Farm, and other Foundation activities exemplify the agricultural, preservation and conservation goals that are at the core of the Foundation's mission and serve as an outdoor classroom. In partnership with the National Park Service, the Accokeek Foundation stewards a 200-acre portion of Piscataway Park and both organizations seek to preserve the view directly across the Potomac River from Mount Vernon. The National Colonial Farm is an outdoor living history museum that educates people about life on a middle-class tobacco farm at the onset of the Revolutionary War. Skilled interpreters lead tours of the colonial structures including a circa 1780 farm dwelling, an 18th century tobacco barn, smokehouse, and out-kitchen, the surrounding fields, Museum Garden, and Heritage Breed animals. Demonstrations of wool spinning, candlemaking, blacksmithing, cooking, and other colonial activities are part of week-end and special programs. Annual public celebrations including Children's Day, African-American Heritage Day, and Colonial Day highlight the cultural heritage of the Tidewater Potomac region. In its 13th year, the Accokeek Foundation's multi-faceted Ecosystem Farm provides nationally-recognized leadership on resource preservation and sustainable agriculture. The Ecosystem Farm offers educational opportunities for farmers, students, scholars and consumers from around the globe through its Center for Land-Based Training.
